In today's society, there seems to be a clear divide between those who are religious and those who are political. Many people believe that one's religious beliefs should not mix with their political views. However, as a Christian, I believe that the Bible speaks on both God and government and that being a faithful follower of Christ also requires us to be involved in politics.
The Bible is not just a spiritual guide for our personal lives, but it also speaks on how we should interact with the world around us. In fact, the Bible is filled with stories and teachings that address the relationship between God and government. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we can see God's involvement in the political affairs of His people.
One of the most well-known examples of this is found in the book of Exodus when God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. This was a political act as it involved overthrowing a corrupt government. In Exodus 14:30, we see that "the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore." This was not just a spiritual deliverance, but it was also a political one. God showed His power and authority over the government of Egypt, proving that He is above all earthly rulers.
Another example can be found in the story of Daniel in the book of Daniel. Daniel was a faithful follower of God who found himself in a high position in the Babylonian government. However, when King Darius issued a decree that went against Daniel's faith in God, he did not hesitate to disobey it and continue praying to God (Daniel 6:10). This ultimately led him to be thrown into the lion's den, but God protected him and showed His sovereignty over earthly rulers.
Furthermore, in the New Testament, we can see how Jesus interacted with the government during His time on earth. He paid taxes (Matthew 22:21), but He also spoke out against the corrupt religious and political leaders of His time (Matthew 23). Jesus never shied away from addressing political issues and standing up for what is right in the eyes of God.
Moreover, in Romans 13:1, Paul writes, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." This verse clearly states that God has established governments and that we are called to submit to them. However, this does not mean blindly following or supporting everything that the government does. We see in the Bible that there were times when God's people had to stand up against the government and fight for justice.
As Christians, we must remember that our ultimate allegiance is to God, not any earthly government. Therefore, we must use our biblical understanding and principles to guide our political views and actions. We should seek to promote justice, compassion, and righteousness in our society just as God calls us to in Micah 6:8, "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God."
However, we must also be careful not to fall into the trap of using our faith as a means to push a political agenda. As Christians, we are called to love and respect others regardless of their political beliefs (1 Peter 2:17). Our focus should always remain on sharing the love of Christ with others rather than trying to force our political views onto them.
In conclusion, as Christians, we cannot separate our biblical beliefs from our political views. The Bible speaks on both God and government, and as followers of Christ, we are called to be involved in politics. This does not mean blindly following a specific party or candidate, but rather seeking to align our political views with the teachings and principles found in the Bible. Let us remember that our true citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and while we are here on earth, let us use our voices and actions to bring glory to God and advance His kingdom.
